What is Vaudeville?

Vaudeville is a theatrically performed variety show, it is made of completely unrelated acts put together for a performance. Vaudeville was especially popular from the 1880's to the 1930's in America and Canada. The acts varied, the acts were things such as; singers, dancers, musicians, trained animals, acrobats and movies. Long story short Vaudeville is basically a variety of different entertainment styles put together for people's enjoyment.

Some acts:

  • Rosales sisters
  • Bobby Brandy
  • Bobby Sargent
  • Florida Trio
  • Marcy brothers & Beatrice
  • Max Miller
  • Harry Richman & Florence Desmond
  • Professor Lamberti
  • Max Wall
  • Larry Adler

Origin:
Vaudeville originated from variety entertainment because it became so popular throughout different classes. variety acts back then were intended for all male audiences because they were obscenely comical and vulgar. But in 1881 a man called Tony Pastor, who was a singer, created a variety show for families instead of all male audiences, once other mangers had seen / heard how much money this brought in they all followed in his footsteps. Vaudeville suddenly became a huge thing in american culture.
